The year ahead 2017.

So I been thinking about what I want to accomplish year. This past year was not my been my strongest. I feel I failed in many ways. The film I am developing got put on hold, I was not committed to this blog like I should, I did not get my production company up and running and didn’t make much art. So I am not happy with myself.

That being said I want the this year to be amazing. Make the year a new start for me. I have given some thought to what I want to do and here is what I have so far: Grow personally. I am starting to work on improving me. My Health, my work and my personal life. I have started to get into Robin Sharma on how to become the best me I possible can be. I think that it doesn’t hurt to get into self improvement. God knows I need too.

This blog: Yes I used to write in this blog often, but have gotten away from it. I want to build this blog back up and turn it into a leading film blog. I want to share my journey as a filmmaker, artist and as a creative. Then there is giving you readers information you can use out there. Things I find. I also am going to have guest writers like Ken Anthony help provide content.  I will be shooting for over 200 post this. Ambitious yes., but I think you’ll all get a lot out of it. A few years ago Ted Hope had Hope for Film blog. I got so much out of it and learned a lot. I want to do the same thing with this blog for you.

Production Company: This is the year I officially start my production company. That means making it a legal entity. People will go around claiming they have a production company yet it is not a legal company; which means they do not really have a production company. Filmmaking is a business as well as an art form. When I think about projects I am thinking in two art forms: the art of telling a story visually and the art of business. It is important that you think this way. It helps give you realistic picture of what you can do when making your film.

Film Projects: Right now I have two film project: one is a short about a writer that is having an existential crisis who talks to the ghost of Jack Kerouac and my film dealing with sexual violence in the form of sex trafficking and combat veterans issues.  I took a long break from this project. I am now coming back to it. I have to finish researching it and then write. I will have a first draft in 4 months. After rewrites, I will then package the film and start looking for investors. I want to start shooting this film at around the end of this year. Now for the short, the goal is to shoot it in May. This gives us enough time to raise capital to shoot it, do perproduction and then shoot it. I will also be playing Jack Kerouac. I have already started to grow my hair out for the role and reading up on Jack. We will be submitting this film to Sundance, SXSW, TriBecca and TIFF. We have that kind of confidence in this film to submit it into those film festivals. We have a great screenplay and talented people working on it. One of them is Ken Anthony who will be a producer.

Advocacy: Another thing I will be doing is advocacy work. One of the reasons I am a filmmaker is that it allows me to talk about issues I care about. One of those issues is sexual violence. Now on 2011 I started on the feature, and I got very much side tracked, which I will be going into in the near future, and now I am back to working on it. Now the issue has evolved to sex trafficking which is  rape for profit and I get to discuss it. Same goes for combat veterans issues. We have been at war and it has taken its toll on many who fought in it. I already do veterans mental health advocacy work here in Tampa, and this film helps me further that discussion to even a larger crowd.

Film Society: Tampa needs a true film society. We have organizations that have film society in there name, yet they do not act like a real film society. They are more like AV clubs with a membership fee, they are not cultural institutions which film societies are suppose to be: They do not have programs that teach media literacy. They do not serve the public interest but only their own. Which is fine, but they are not true film societies.  This will be a 501 c3 non-profit organization. It will bring cinema appreciation to the people of the Bay Area. We will start programs that teach media literacy to children in schools.  We will celebrate cinema as a community. It will showcase filmmakers like Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Ford Coppola, Sergio Leone, Scorsese, Allen and many more.  It will have programs for filmmakers. It will celebrate independent cinema.

Become the Master of my Craft: I am going to learn and become an expert in filmmaking.
This is something I think we all should do. I have numerous books on filmmaking at every level. is your friend. I have gotten many books on filmmaking from thriftbooks and and have been diving into them.  I want to know as much as I possible can for a few reasons: One to avert disaster, if you know how do something the right way you will be likely to make costly mistakes. Another reason is it helps you be a  better leader. If you have knowledge in a certain, you can speak and lead with authority. You can help other and give guidance. Most of all be helpful to others, and it is also about being a professional. Professionals know their craft and know it well. And of course it betters my chances of success.

I am looking for an editor. I think it would benefit me greatly.

And soon I am going to explain the events of February 2013 that had much to do with my film.

So just to give you all an update about what is going on with me, I have started an outline on my short film about forced prostitution and I am writing character development and back story. I want to have a finally draft in less than 2 months and I am going to have the outline done this week.  I think I have a good film in the works and I  hope , when it is done, you’ll all enjoy it and not feel cheated out of 15 to 20 minutes of your life. I also want to make an impact regarding this topic and to bring awareness to it. I know around my neck woods you are constantly being cheated out of 10 to 25 minutes of your life and I will not follow in the same footsteps.   There is the standard that it has to be maintained  or why put it out. The story has to be spot on, other wise you’ll have a bad film. Remember, script is 75% of your film. Shitty script shitty film. There is no way about squaring that circle.   I haven’t given up on the series. I am still working on it, though I have fallen behind of  the 8 ball but will soon be back on track.

I got my porch/studio set up. I will have some pictures in the day or two. I am ready to go. I plan to have a show in 6 to 8 months.  Now where and who in God’s name would have me in their is remains to be seen.  Once again, if it not good and I will not waste your time; however that being said, I believe I will have something worth showing.

Finally, Semone Fournillier graduated from American Film Institute Conservatory today. As those who follow me know that I have been working with her a project and might be working on a couple more. She is a talented writer and has a amazing future ahead. I am so very proud of her and what she has accomplished.

Oh, in the next day or two I will be writing about a new crowdfunding site.  I think you’ll dig it a lot.

Quick update, 1 June 14. 2:14 am

Ok, so I was asked to join and produce a project; which I had strong reservations about doing.  I am not going to go into the details, but I saw huge red flags go up and now have decided to be a consultant rather than a producer. However, good news, through that process I came up with a film idea for a short film regarding the sex trade; which, as some of you know, I have been developing for a feature film.  Yes, it is heavy subject, but it is something I feel passionately about.  So I will be writing and directing it.  I will need your help to get it made.  I will need you to spread the word about it and when the time comes, need you to kick in some money.

On the other fronts of my lackluster attempts at being an artist, I bought 4 lbs of wheat paste so that I can start working on mixed medium pieces. Also got 3 tubes of paint: black, white and red.  I am talking to some editors to edit Jamie Lowe’s”De Flip Side” and I just got a copy from Jonny Cromwell  book, “82 Days”; which I am going to start reading and strategizing for a release. And of course I have the series that I am developing. Which is an intensive endevour.

I also want you to check out this new crowdfunding site I am going to do a review on it this week, and they seem like really cool people that you should look up on Twitter and Facebook and say hi. They are really nice people.

If there is anything you want to discuss hit me up. I would love to hear back from you all.

Why I am doing five shorts this year.

Last Night a colleague of mine, Ron Borders  asked me “Instead of doing 5 shorts why not just do a feature?”  Which is a valid question, which deserves good answer.  First off I have never been to film school, so I do not have the experience of producing and making films that one who went to film school has.   For me it has all been OJT, reading and a lot of listening.  So for me, this is like a year of film school with 5 thesis projects plus a full length documentary on South Sudan.  I will make a lot of mistakes, learn a lot and at the end have a body of work to go off of.  So with that I will have a body of work that I can say to an investor “Here is what I have done, these are the awards I have gotten and yes I seem to know what I am doing. Please trust me with your money.” Also I have to think 5, 10 years down the road. What I mean is that with this year of short films it is a building block to the next level, which if you know me is all the above.  I want to produce and direct in whatever medium I can, meaning Film, TV, Web, Theater, Graphic Novel or in whatever it is.

Yes I have bitten off more than you or I can chew, but I do it knowing I can do it somehow.  I have a company I know I can grow. I have a vision for what I want kinds of material I want to produce and what kinds of people I want to work with.  I also want to be able to help other artist and filmmakers. Right now I am in Tampa and I want to help change the culture of film into something that is well respected and received.   So yes this is the year of short films but it is with a purpose.

You can now get paid on Vimeo

Really good news, Vimeo is going to make available to it upgraded members  a way to make money off of their content.  In a short while you can have a tip jar on your page that will allow people to donate money and soon after that they will able to charge for your content. This is a great new platform to monetize your work.

I am now the Vice President at Domain Pictures.

I have been asked by Preston Walden to be the Vice President of his production company Domain Pictures.  It is an incorporated company here in Tampa, Fl and as many of you know, Preston and I have been working on Grey Room which I am producing.  We have a number of solid projects, which I will share in my next post, and are working on a strategy on how we want to proceed with these various projects. There is a logical order by which we move on various projects. That will be another post as well.

As you know we live in a different world now. We are too aware that either you change or die off.  We live in a transmedia world where we tell our stories on many different mediums on many different platforms. Preston and myself understand this and are proceeding according with our projects.

We  are really excitied about the future.  We have a lot of projects. Good projects. and we keep coming into one all the time. We have been blessed with talented upcoming writers and directors.  This year alone will make 3 to 4 shorts and a documentary.  Great times ahead.  Now lets get to work.

Big road ahead

This week has been the week of meetings.  Note to yourself, do them with people you enjoy being around. Makes it fun.

So I have a ton of work and am trying to figure out where and how to start.  I have a ton of research to do on a subject for a film I am producing.  I am teaching myself how to write a business plan so that I can write one for my production company as well as one for a film I am producing.  I need to start  searching for talent and a director for that film I need to write a business plan for;  and as soon as I have said business plan, talent and director I then need to go in search of the almighty investor.

Along with that, I have to do preproduction for a doc I am producing as well as do some social media for Grey Room.  Do not forget we will begin Crowdfunding for it in February.  I also have to come up with an article I need to write for the FMPTA news letter The Slate. Any suggestions? God knows I could use some. Also, if you want me to write about something please feel free to make suggestions. It would benefit me because I would have to go and research the topic.

Also,  with that I am running for Vice President For the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association Tampa Bay Chapter. FMPTA. If you are a member please vote for me. I will be writing as to why you should vote for me.

This is where I need to learn how to plan and organize my tasks. I am starting to learn about strategic planning, something that I think  you should learn if you are to be successful at filmmaking. There are proven tools that work and should be applied to your filmmaking skills.
